Program Description
- Physical Education Teacher Incentive program funding supported ongoing incentive grants for school districts to hire more credentialed physical education teachers in elementary and middle schools, kindergarten through grade eight. The purpose of the program was to help address the rising incidence of obesity and its effects by ensuring that schools have trained experts to provide the required number of instructional minutes in physical education. The funds were to be used to hire credentialed staff to help kids develop healthy life-long exercise habits.
Local educational agencies (LEAs), including direct-funded charter schools, were required to apply for funds on behalf of their eligible schools. Schools were selected for funding at random while also ensuring an equitable distribution of funds statewide based on type of school, size and geographic location. Funding for each LEA was based on a specified amount for each selected school site.
