State Superintendent Tony Thurmond to Join Thousands of Students and Educators at Tenth Annual California STEAM Symposium

ANAHEIM—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond will speak in person at the tenth annual California STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Symposium on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at the Anaheim Convention Center at 8:30 a.m. The Symposium is co-hosted by the California Department of Education (CDE), the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, and the Californians Dedicated to Education Foundation. Programming concludes on Sunday, October 2, 2022.

“This is part of our collective mission to bring diverse students into these fields, which will in turn diversify the workforce for the STEAM fields,” said Superintendent Thurmond. “What better place to honor and uplift the importance of diversity than at an event that, at its very core, is harnessing a spectrum of content areas for interdisciplinary learning while engaging students’ hands and minds.”

The event brings together thousands of passionate students, educators, curriculum administrators, professionals, and nonprofit and corporate partners seeking inspiration and energizing engagements for the opportunity to collaborate with STEAM education experts to expand STEAM learning opportunities for everyone in California and beyond.

This year’s Symposium is grounded in principles for advancing equity of traditionally marginalized students and communities, with a focus on Access, Awareness, Opportunities, and Outcomes. Throughout the event, educators and STEAM enthusiasts will come together to participate in more than 150 breakout sessions, share ideas, and grow their STEAM mindsets. There are opportunities to learn high-quality strategies to cultivate systems that promote lifelong learning through inclusive practices, high-impact techniques, and policies. These approaches promote a sense of belonging and ignite student passion for learning as well as support the social-emotional development of our education community.
