Elementary Mathematics Presidential Award Recipient
Jamie Garner has been an educator for 11 years. She is a founding teacher of Walnut Elementary Education Center in the Turlock Unified School District, where she has taught sixth grade for the mathematics and science magnet program for six years. Previously, she taught sixth grade at Crowell Elementary School and primary grades at Summit Charter Academy.
Jamie has served as a mentor teacher for the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-based Future City Competition for the past three years. In 2012, her team placed third in the county. In 2013, her students placed second in the county and fourth in the state.
Jamie has been the Pi Day Coordinator for her campus for the past three years. On this day, students school-wide engage in multiple mathematics activities related to this special irrational number, helping bring joy to mathematics learning. In addition to her work with students, Jamie serves on her school's Leadership Team and has given in-service trainings in the area of technology use in the classroom and gifted and talented education in the regular classroom setting.
Jamie was honored with the Turlock Rotary Teacher of the Year award in 2012 and the Stanislaus County Teacher of the Year award in 2013.
Jamie has a B.A., summa cum laude, in liberal studies and a M.Ed., with distinction, in curriculum and instruction from California State University, Stanislaus.
