California Education Code (EC) Section 51225.3 (a)(1)(C) specifies, in order to receive a high school diploma, a student must complete at least two courses in science, including biological and physical sciences.
This statute specifies a minimum of two courses. High school graduation requirements are determined at the local educational agency (LEA) level. Whether a course is considered a biological or physical science course is also a decision made at the LEA level. Additional information is available on the California Department of Education’s High School Innovations and Initiatives Office State Minimum High School Graduation Requirements web page.
LEAs may also want to consider information regarding A–G courses when making a local decision regarding science course offerings or science high school graduation requirements for science.
EC can be found in the California Law library.
