DataQuest is the California Department of Education’s (CDE) public data reporting web site. DataQuest provides meaningful data and statistics about California’s K-12 public educational system that supports a wide variety of informational, research, and policy needs. The purpose of the DataQuest Update is to provide: (1) announcements regarding public data releases and availability; (2) general information and analysis on various data reporting topics; and (3) practical tips on how to effectively use DataQuest to obtain information. Release of New Data Reports on DataQuest
The CDE has released new Annual Enrollment, English Learner, and Transitional Kindergarten data reports which are now publicly available on the CDE DataQuest web site. These data reports are based on data submitted and certified in the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS) by districts and charter schools. The Annual Enrollment and English Learner reports reflect data on Census Day 2019 (the first Wednesday in October). These reports include:
2019-20 Annual Enrollment Data Reports
- Enrollment by Ethnicity and Grade
- Enrollment Multi-Year Summary by Ethnicity
- Enrollment by Ethnicity (with county/district/school data)
- Enrollment Multi-Year Summary by Grade
- Enrollment by Grade (with county/district/school data)
- Enrollment by Ethnicity for Charter and Non-Charter Schools
- Enrollment by Subgroup for Charter and Non-Charter Schools
- Enrollment for Charter and Non-Charter Schools (with county/district/school data)
- Enrollment Multi-Year Summary for Charter and Non-Charter Schools
- K-12 Enrollment by Age Group and Grade

Users may access these reports by performing the following steps:
- Navigate to the DataQuest Homepage
- Select the desired Level (State, County, District, or School)
- Select desired report Subject area:
- Annual Enrollment (which includes Transitional Kindergarten Participation data reports)
- English Learner
- Select “Submit”
- Select the desired Year (e.g., 2019–20)
- Select “Submit”
- Select desired report from the menu
- Select “Submit”

Student Groups and Foster Pages
Data and Statistics topics now include the Student Groups Information page which provide access to information about vulnerable student group populations in California. The Foster Youth in California Schools page includes information about educational outcomes, programs, educational rights, legislation, and resources specific to foster youth students.
New Data Governance Page
As part of the ongoing Data and Statistics webpage redesign, CDE’s new Data Governance page includes aspects of data management such as data privacy, the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA), data standards and inventory, and CDE’s Educational Data Governance (EDGO) program.
Upcoming Data Releases
Consistent with prior years, the CDE anticipates releasing data reports on Long-Term English Learners (LTEL) and At-Risk of Becoming LTEL sometime during June or July 2020. In conjunction with this data release, the CDE will also be providing corresponding downloadable data files. Prior to the public data release, the CDE will also be providing LEAs with access to the student-level information.
DataQuest Tips
Viewing Annual Enrollment Data Across Multiple Years
It is often helpful to view data across time in order to see important changes or trends. To facilitate this capability, the Annual Enrollment reports on DataQuest include the following statewide Multi-Year Enrollment reports:
- Enrollment Multi-Year Summary by Ethnicity
- Enrollment Multi-Year Summary by Grade
- Enrollment Multi-Year Summary for Charter and Non-Charter Schools
These multi-year reports also include several data filters within the expandable “Report Options and Filters” section that allow users to see enrollment trends across time for the following student groups: English Learners, Students with Disabilities, Socioeconomically Disadvantaged, Migrant, Foster, and Homeless students.
