A well-lighted, comfortable classroom is essential for effective instruction. The California Code of Regulations, Title 5 (Title 5), Section 14030(l) specifies that schools should have lighting that provides "comfortable and adequate visual conditions." Title 5, Section 14030(m) states that a school's acoustic design "shall complement the educational function." Also, a comfortable thermal condition is essential in creating a supportive learning environment.

has resources for creating and maintaining high performance schools. Publications and resources such as its Best Practices Manuals, Volumes 1-4, a list of low-emitting products, and sample specifications for high performance portable classrooms, to name a few, can be found on their website. This organization also provides training on the principles in their best practices manuals.
Indoor Air Quality
A free download regarding a brief description of school facility concerns about indoor air quality can be found at the California Department of Education's website. It is a simplified discussion of problems that can affect the health of both staff and students and includes a list of management procedures that can be used to help mitigate problems of unclean air.
