Conceptual Display Bus/Parent Drop-off Example 5

This is an Accessible Alternative Version of the conceptual design Bus/Parent Drop-off Example 5 (PDF). The Adobe Acrobat Portable Document should be the preferred version for downloading.

A conceptual design for school site layout displaying parent drop-off, bus loading areas, and parking.

Title 5, Article 4. Standards, Planning, and Approval of School Facilities

Section 14030. Standards for Development of Plans for the Design and Construction of School Facilities.

The following standards for new schools are for the use of all school districts for the purposes of educational appropriateness and promotion of school safety:

b. Site Layout. Parent drop-off, bus loading areas, and parking shall be separated to allow students to enter and exit the school grounds safely unless these features are unavailable due to limited acreage in urban areas or restrictive locations, specifically:

5. To provide equal access to insure the purposes of the least restrictive environment, bus drop-off for handicapped students is in the same location as for regular education students.

There are three illustrations. The first illustration is an acceptable layout for accessible and general bus drop-off at the same location. The second illustration raises concerns with the general and bus drop-offs being separated. The third illustration is unacceptable, with the accessible and general bus drop-off being separated and the accessible bus drop-off located near the loading dock/utility area.

California Department of Education, School Facilities and Transportation Services Division. These are conceptual displays only and are intended to illustrate a specific Title 5 criterion. The California Department of Education will evaluate designs based on the unique site conditions and the educational program of a school.
