The California Department of Education (CDE), Instructional Quality Commission (IQC), and State Board of Education (SBE) commenced the process for developing new California computer science content standards in September 2016. Per CaliforniaEducation CodeSection 60605.4, "on or before July 31, 2019, the Instructional Quality Commission shall consider developing and recommending to the SBE computer science content standards for kindergarten and grades 1 to 12, inclusive, pursuant to recommendations developed by a group of computer science experts." SBE Adopted Computer Science Standards
The IQC approved and recommended the draft computer science standards to the SBE on July 26, 2018. The SBE approved the IQC recommendation and adopted the computer science standards on September 6, 2018.

Computer Science Standards Advisory Committee Members
On July 12, 2017, the SBE appointed 21 members to the Computer Science Standards Advisory Committee (CSSAC). The CSSAC assisted in the development of the California computer science standards.

Computer Science Strategic Implementation Plan
The CDE, SBE, and Legislature are commencing the process for developing California Computer Science Strategic Implementation Plan per California Education Code sections 53310–53315.
Focus Groups
The CDE convened three focus group meetings to provide input on guidelines that will be utilized by a group of computer science experts who will be tasked to develop the new standards. The meetings were open to the public.
