Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

Comprehensive Statewide Literacy Needs Assessment

The California Department of Education (CDE) was recently awarded the federal Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the CLSD grant is to leverage and expand existing statewide infrastructure, guidance, and expertise to bring coherence to California’s system of literacy supports to improve student outcomes over a period of five years.

We are inviting all local educational agencies to complete a comprehensive statewide literacy needs assessment, which will help inform California’s State Literacy Plan. CLSD activities, an informational webinar recording, instructions, and the survey itself are available on the CDE’s CLSD Grant web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/pd/ps/clsd.asp [Note: This web page is no longer available].

We would like your help as we prepare for the 2020 CLSD activities.

The deadline to complete the needs assessment is 5:00 p.m. on February 10, 2020.

If you have any questions regarding this subject, please email the CLSD team at CLSDP@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
