Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

American Indian Education Oversight Committee Recruitment

As the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, I am seeking your participation on the American Indian Education Oversight Committee (AIEOC) and cordially invite you to complete the application to serve on this committee. This committee shall provide input and advice on all aspects of American Indian education programs established by the state.

The Superintendent’s Initiatives Office will be hosting an informational session to discuss how to apply to the AIEOC on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, from 4 to 5 p.m. Please register for this session on Zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_SbqxaFe0S0mMf_BiWvIl8Q [Note: this event has passed and the link is no longer active].

The AIEOC was established in 2007 by California Education Code Section 33370, which delineates the purpose, structure, and makeup of the committee. The AIEOC is further governed by Title 5, California Code of Regulations, Section 11996.2.

I would appreciate your knowledge and expertise as I develop educational opportunities for American Indian students enrolled in public education. Your participation will help in the building of partnerships and opportunities for the American Indian community.

The AIEOC will be working on subjects including reviewing curriculum resources and instructional materials for cultural relevancy, strategies to reduce chronic absenteeism of American Indian students, studying the impacts of COVID-19 on our American Indian students, and identifying specific supports and resources that American Indian education centers need to support American Indian students and communities.

Your presence on this committee will allow for the exchange of information among the broader educational team as it promotes educational and cultural understanding and clarification for the success for American Indian students in California. Service on the AIEOC will require virtually meeting on a quarterly basis, four meetings per year. The AIEOC adheres to the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act, and these are direct appointments by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

To apply to be a member of the AIEOC, please complete and submit the application form, which can be found on the California Department of Education Application for Appointments web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/eo/ap/bc/.

Please note that the information requested should be submitted in the above survey. Please be sure to identify the AIEOC as the position sought.

  • Please also attach your resume. You resume should summarize your knowledge and experience in serving American Indian students.
  • The survey and resume must be submitted no later than April 1, 2021.

If you have any questions regarding this appointment, please contact Cindy Quiralte, Policy Advisor, Superintendent’s Initiatives Office, by email at CQuirate@cde.ca.gov. [Note: the preceding contact information is no longer correct. Please contact the Superintendent's Correspondence Unit at 916-319-0800].

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
