Dear County and District Superintendents, Charter School Administrators, Parents, and Principals:

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Invites California Parents to Share Ideas About Public Education at Virtual Town Hall

I am pleased to host a virtual Back-to-School Parent Town Hall on Wednesday, September 28, from 6 p.m.to 7:30 p.m.

Parents and parent groups from across the state are invited to join me for a conversation as we all work towards creating the best environment we can for California’s nearly 6 million students. The event is open to parents and caregivers of current and former K–12 public school students in our state.

As schools across the state struggle with challenges like declining enrollment, the California Department of Education (CDE) is interested in hearing from families about their school experiences and will use this Town Hall to ask questions and survey participants to elicit their ideas about ways to improve the public school experience, close the opportunity gap, and improve academic success for all students. Participants will also learn what the CDE is doing to support schools with health and safety, literacy, enrollment, and more.

Please help us by extending this invitation to families in your community. For your use, I am attaching a flyer (in English and Spanish) with more information and details for event registration (NOTE: The attached flyers have been removed in light of the event having concluded). American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be provided for this event. Registration for the event is available at https://surveys3.cde.ca.gov/go/btspth2022-23.asp (NOTE: The survey and registration are now past the date and no longer available). The Parent Town Hall will also be livestreamed on the CDE Facebook web page at https://www.facebook.com/CAEducation. Questions about this event may be directed to parentfeedback@cde.ca.gov.

Thank you for your support and extraordinary efforts on behalf of California students and families. I hope you will take time join us for this event and to share the opportunity with parents and caregivers in your school community.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
