Dear County and District Superintendents, Charter School Administrators, and Principals:

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond to Host Learning Acceleration Webinar (October 11, 2022)

I am pleased to host a Learning Acceleration webinar on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. This webinar will be open to school administrators, educators, partners, parents, and anyone engaged in supporting student learning.

The start of a new school year marks a time of opportunity for California schools. The new state budget includes $7.9 billion for learning recovery; specifically, one-time funds to be used through 2027–28 on strategies to support academic learning recovery as well as staff and student social and emotional well-being following two-and-a-half challenging years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Join me as we highlight ways schools are using these targeted funds to create positive student outcomes. This virtual event is an opportunity to hear about proven strategies to promote learning acceleration and recovery, including high-dose tutoring, expanding the school year, mental health and counseling services, and using summative data to guide instruction to students.

Panelists include:

  • Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond, President, California State Board of Education
  • Dr. Michelle Magyar, Executive Advisor, California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE)
  • Dr. Ingrid Roberson, Assistant Director of Research and Learning, CCEE
  • Cheryl Cotton, Deputy Superintendent of the Instruction, Measurement, and Administration Branch at the California Department of Education

To inform our work and the event, please take a moment to complete our Learning Acceleration Survey. We want to hear from you about the strategies you are using to promote learning acceleration and recovery, the innovative ideas you are thinking of using, the barriers you are facing, and any technical assistance you may need. Complete the survey at the following Google web link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfC8_Lf9YIJljXkaZbKXYz3WkH5nO2LKu0FaHFMXRdSu8EDHg/viewform?usp=send_form.

Thank you for supporting our students, educators, and families as we emerge from the pandemic and move forward to address the learning acceleration and recovery of our students.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
