Dear County and District Superintendents, Charter School Administrators, and School Principals:

Personal Finance Education Summit (March 26, 2024)

I am pleased to host and moderate a Personal Finance Education Summit on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, from noon to 2 p.m. in the State Board Room at the California Department of Education (CDE) Headquarters at 1430 N Street in Sacramento. The focus of the Summit is to address current and future efforts to support personal finance education for K–12 students, especially those in marginalized communities.

More than 25 states require that a personal finance course be taught as a graduation requirement and, through legislation, I want to ensure that all students in California are afforded that same opportunity. We can set up our students for future success through fiscal responsibility with skills in how to manage their finances and avoid unnecessary debt, empowering them to make good choices. We can use personal finance education as an engaging way to teach the kind of things that students are already required to learn.

Panelists include:

  • Tim Ranzetta, Co-Founder of Next Gen Personal Finance
  • William (Bill) Borzage, High School Entrepreneurship/Financial Literacy Mentor
  • Valerie Chapman, educator, and founder/CEO of Financial Literacy for Kids
  • Annamarie Lusardi, Professor of Finance at Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research

Research shows that students who have access to high-quality personal financial education have better financial outcomes as adults, resulting in less debt and a higher quality of life. This is why the CDE has partnered with California-based nonprofit Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) to provide teacher stipends and professional development for financial literacy.

We hope to have you join us in person, but we are also offering a virtual option via Zoom and Facebook Live. Please register for the Summit via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_o6ylpBCYSf6U585crul1yw#/registration.

You can watch the livestreamed event on the California Department of Education Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CAEducation.

For questions, please contact the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division at CFIRD@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
