Dear County and District Superintendents, Charter School Administrators, and Middle and High School Principals:

2024 California Student Mock Election: School Registration Opens on April 15

The 2024 General Election is quickly approaching, and it is the perfect opportunity to get students involved and excited about civic engagement. The California Secretary of State and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction are partnering to host the 2024 California Student Mock Election on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

School registration for the California Student Mock Election opens on Monday, April 15, 2024. This program helps young people discover the importance of elections and the power of their votes in the democratic process. Students will discover how government and politics affect their daily lives through your school’s involvement. Once all the votes are counted, participating schools and students will be able to compare their votes to those of their peers at schools across the state.

We strongly encourage incorporating this interactive program into your school’s curriculum. Registration and other important participation details for the 2024 California Student Mock Election are available on the California Secretary of State’s Student Mock Election web page at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/studentmockelection. You will be able to register your school and obtain resources for holding a successful student mock election through the web page. Please note that only one registration is allowed per school. If you and your colleagues would like to participate, please be sure to collaborate and select a Mock Election Coordinator for your campus.

Each school that registers by Monday, September 16, 2024, will receive a welcome packet in the mail. The welcome packets will contain an informational letter, “Save the Date” posters, High School Poll Worker recruitment flyers, and “I Voted” stickers that have been exclusively designed by one of the California Secretary of State’s talented student assistants. Schools can choose to receive Student Voter Information Guides and ballots electronically or in hard copy format. Please visit the California Secretary of State’s Tools for Success web page at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/studentmockelection/tools-success to access the supply kit in electronic format.

Together, we can inspire a new generation to become more active in the democratic process. If you have questions about the 2024 California Student Mock Election, obtaining physical voter registration cards, or hosting a voter registration drive, please contact the Student Mock Election Team at MyVote@sos.ca.gov or 916-651-3070.

Sincerely,

Tony Thurmond
State Superintendent of Public Instruction
