State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Statement on the Teachers’ Strike in LAUSD

LOS ANGELES—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond traveled to Los Angeles today to meet with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and leaders from both sides involved in the teachers’ strike that is happening in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

Thurmond has been in communication with officials from both sides since taking office, trying to help resolve their disagreements.

The outcome of those prior discussions, paired with progress from today’s meetings, has Thurmond feeling hopeful that the LAUSD and United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) are heading in a positive direction to resolve the conflict.

Thurmond is pleased to announce that the parties agreed to return to the bargaining table. He remains committed to do everything he can to bring the strike to prompt resolution.

“I want to thank all of those in Los Angeles that have spoken with me over the last few weeks,” Thurmond said. “Your stories are genuine and your concerns are valid. We made great progress today and I am certain that together we will get through this and we will get our kids back to school.”
