State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Calls All Parties to the Table to End Strike in New Haven Unified
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond is working quickly to end a teachers’ strike at the New Haven Unified School District (NHUSD) as they enter their eighth day on strike today. Thurmond has called all parties to the table to find a resolution with a sense of urgency to end this strike immediately.
“This has gone on long enough. Students are losing out on quality educational minutes with their teachers that they have had all year, and teachers want to be back in the classroom, but are faced with the difficult decision to stand up for themselves.”
Although bargaining teams for both the district and the New Haven Teachers Association have been in sessions all week, including starting again at 11 a.m. today, tensions remain high. “I am happy to do what I can to help with this strike, but I want it known that my priority is to end it, and I will do what I can to encourage all parties to stay at the table until a resolution is reached, preferably as soon as possible,” said Thurmond.# # # #
