In 2011, former SSPI Tom Torlakson initiated the Team California for Healthy Kids (TCHK) campaign to promote good eating habits and physical activity in schools, before and after school programs, childcare programs and communities. His signature campaign was an outgrowth of his own dedication to physical fitness and his experience as a high school coach and lifetime marathon runner. TCHK goals were to reduce health disparities and close the achievement gap. The tenets were based on research confirming the connection between health, learning, and attendance. The former SSPI held community events, promoted TCHK on social media, and developed a CDE Web page to help educate school personnel and families on healthy lifestyle choices. The campaign activities waned dramatically during SSPI’s second term and there have been no activities since January, 2016.
