  • Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act External link opens in new window or tab. was signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown, July 14, 2011. According to cosponsors Equality California and the Genders and Sexualities Alliance Network, the purpose of the FAIR Act was to end the exclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) history in education and to promote school safety.
  • Comprehensive Sexual Health Education External link opens in new window or tab.: In January 2016, California adopted the new law that requires comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education to be taught in public schools. California Education Code sections 51930–51939. Comprehensive sexual health education must be taught once in middle school and once in high school. All instruction in all grades must be age-appropriate and medically accurate. Comprehensive sexual health education must address the needs of students of all genders and sexual orientations.
