Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

NOTE: The application due date for this program has passed.

Funding Description

The California Department of Education (CDE) Nutrition Services Division (NSD), through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), will grant funds to eligible elementary school sites to provide students with a variety of free fresh fruit and vegetable snacks during the school day as a supplement to, and not part of, the school breakfast and lunch programs, and to teach students about good nutrition. The FFVP encourages schools to partner with other entities in the community to support their efforts.

Eligibility

Eligible Applicants Local educational agencies, other organizations or agencies
Required Eligibility Criteria According to Title 7, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 210.2, public school districts, county offices of education, direct-funded charter schools, private schools, and residential child care institutions who are school food authorities are eligible to apply on behalf of elementary school sites that participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

Applicants must submit a grant application package by the due date. To be eligible, a school site MUST: (1) be an elementary school; (2) participate in the NSLP; (3) have 50 percent or more of its students eligible for free or reduced-price (F/RP) meals; (4) provide fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day; (5) agree to make free fresh fruits and vegetables available to all enrolled children; (6) agree to widely publicize the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables within the school; and (7) have documented support of the food service manager or director, principal, and district superintendent.
Other Eligibility Considerations Per federal law, schools are chosen based on their percentage of students qualifying for F/RP meals, with the highest priority given to schools with the highest percentages of low-income students. However, the CDE may select a school with a lower percentage of F/RP enrollment over a school with a higher percentage to either manage the per student allocation requirements of $50 to $75, or if there are significant concerns about a school's ability to properly implement and operate the FFVP.

NOTE: For grades 6, 7, and 8 to be eligible, they must be a part of a qualifying elementary school.
