The Lexile® & Quantile® Framework and Measures

The California Department of Education has partnered with MetaMetrics® to provide additional measures of students' abilities in reading and mathematics.

Overview

The Lexile Framework for Reading and Quantile Framework for Mathematics have been linked to the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Smarter Balanced English language arts/literacy and mathematics assessments. Students who complete these assessments will have Lexile and Quantile Measures reported on their CAASPP Student Score Report. Access a sample Student Score Report on the Starting Smarter External link opens in new window or tab. website.

Lexile and Quantile measures provide a targeted approach for matching students with resources appropriate to their ability. Lexile measures indicate students' reading abilities and Quantile measures indicate students' readiness for instruction in mathematics. The Lexile and Quantile measures are unique in that they can be used as a measure of student achievement as well as a measure of the difficulty of instructional material or resources. In using the Lexile and Quantile measures to make instructional decisions, parents and educators can choose instructional materials most appropriate to the student’s academic development.

These measures help differentiate instruction and monitor growth in reading and mathematics, putting students on the path to success in school, college, and career. Access the Introducing Lexile® and Quantile® Measures External link opens in new window or tab. (PDF) web document for additional information about these measures.

Lexile & Quantile Hub

The Lexile & Quantile Hub External link opens in new window or tab. contains instructional planning resources for parents and educators as well as a variety of tools that support the monitoring of student growth in reading and mathematics toward the goals of college and career readiness. Parents/guardians, educators, and students can access a wealth of free, web-based tools to help find appropriate and challenging learning materials.
