October’s Featured Resource in Tools for Teachers—ELPAC Speaking Domain: Summarize an Academic Presentation Task Type

This month’s featured Tools for Teachers resource, ELPAC Speaking Domain—Summarize an Academic Presentation (SAP) Task Type External link opens in new window or tab. (account required), is a professional learning resource designed to introduce educators to the ELPAC task type: Summarize an Academic Presentation. This resource is intended for facilitators working with a group of educators and provides detailed information and step-by-step directions for facilitating a professional learning session focused on the SAP task type. Through hands-on activities and collaborative discussions, participants will understand the structure of the task type and how to support English learners using the documents available along with the ELPAC Interim Assessments for the Speaking domain.

The resource begins by introducing the task type and the scoring rubric. Educators work in small groups to deconstruct the task and identify the skills that students need to successfully complete it. In addition, educators gain familiarity with the ELPAC Interim Assessments and gain a deeper understanding of how the formative assessment process and strategies can support English learners during instruction. Through this professional learning resource, there are opportunities for educators to clarify their understanding, receive immediate feedback from the facilitator, and access various strategies to support individual learning needs.

The ELPAC Speaking Domain—SAP Task Type is one of the professional learning resources designed to help educators teach and understand the content necessary for effective academic speaking for the ELPAC. To view this and other instructional resources, local educational agency (LEA) staff need a Tools for Teachers account, which they can obtain either through self-registration, described in the flyer How to Self-Register for Tools for Teachers (PDF), or through their LEA CAASPP coordinator.
