Background
On April 25, 2024, the USDA FNS, posted the Final Rule for Child Nutrition Programs: Meal Patterns Consistent with the 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
. The final rule offers new flexibilities for School Nutrition Programs and made significant changes to nutrition standards to be phased in over the next three school years, most notably for added sugar and sodium.
Additionally, food sold or served in schools is also subject to State laws and regulations. Two new acts, the California Food Safety Act and the California School Food Safety Act prohibit the use of various additives beginning January 1, 2027, and December 31, 2027, respectively.
