Free Third-party Readers & Viewers
Free software enabling visitors to the Department's Web site to read documents formatted in different platforms (e.g., Microsoft Word [DOC], Portable Document Format [PDF], etc.)
The California Department of Education (CDE) provides the following links to free third-party readers and viewers to help its site visitors view certain site content. This list of links is not intended to imply that these are the only options available. Appearance on this list does not imply endorsement by the CDE of any third-party software.
Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Files (PDF file extensions)
Microsoft Word Files (DOC file extensions)
- For Windows - Microsoft Word Viewer
- For Macintosh* - Word Documents can be opened with Appleworks (currently shipped with OS X)
- For Macintosh* and Windows - OpenOffice
- For Macintosh* and Windows - Google Documents
Microsoft Excel (for XLS file extensions)
- For Windows - Microsoft Excel Viewer
- For Macintosh* - Excel Spreadsheets can be opened with Appleworks (currently shipped with OS X)

- For Macintosh* and Windows - Google Documents
Microsoft Powerpoint (for PPT file extensions)
- For Windows - Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer 2007
